Hamoshava (Parley): a multiplayer board game in the browser

Hamoshava, called Parley in English, is a multiplayer board game that runs in the browser, Hebrew first: open a room and send friends an invite code, or play against bots. It runs on a real-time server, and you can play it now at parley.ing.

What Hamoshava is

My own product, not client work: a board game of settlements, roads and dice on an island of hexes, which I specified and built. It plays in any browser, on a computer or a phone, with nothing to download.

The challenge: rules, turns and players in real time

In an online board game, several people act on one board at the same time. Everyone has to see the same state, every move has to follow the rules, and some information belongs to one player only, like the cards in your hand.

The decisions

  • The server decides: every move is checked on the server, and each player receives only what they are allowed to see. The browser cannot change the state of the game or show another player's cards.
  • Rooms by invite code: send the code to friends and play together.
  • Bots with levels: play alone against the computer, and pick its level before the game starts.
  • Settings for every game: world and map, turn time and number of players.
  • Hebrew first: the game and its interface are in Hebrew, right to left.

In a product with this many rules, the spec is where you pin them down, before the code. How I work.

What was built

The game is written in TypeScript. Behind it, a server on Cloudflare's infrastructure keeps every game room and updates all the players in real time over WebSockets, a technology for two-way communication between the browser and a server. There are user accounts, ratings, and a home screen with rooms and a shop.

What it means for your project

A game or an interactive experience for a business, say a game people send to their friends in a campaign, is built from the same parts: clear rules, an interface that works on a phone, and sometimes a real-time server. An interactive experience or game starts from $4,090. All the packages and prices are on the home page.

Questions

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. The game opens in the phone's browser, with nothing to download.

Can I play alone?

Yes, against bots. You choose the computer's level before the game starts.

How much does a browser game for a business cost?

An interactive experience or game starts from $4,090 and takes 4-8 weeks. A multiplayer game with accounts and a server is a bigger project, and its price is set after a spec.
